Montenegro has committed to fulfil the obligations from international treaties and obligations of the Action Plan for Chapter 24 in the process of the EU accession. In this context, our country had to build a modern centre for asylum seekers and purchase equipment according to the EU standards.

Within the project Growing Together 3 Portal “Analitika” presents IPA projects that are completed or are in the final stage, and are intended to demonstrate how important it is for our country to use the IPA funds for the further development of all segments of our society.

Centre for asylum in Podgorica managed to provide the necessary means through the IPA project for renovating facilities, purchasing equipment and vehicles and thus making the stay in the Centre more pleasant and comfortable. The main objective of the project, whose implementation was completed in 2012, was to provide support in the construction of the asylum system in Montenegro, through co-financing the construction of the Centre for asylum seekers and procurement of the equipment.

Centre for asylum seekers was built and put into operation 20 March 2013 and provided with the appropriate equipment that fully meets the standards of reception and care of asylum seekers and persons with recognized refugee status, subsidiary protection and temporary protection.

The project, realized by the Centre in cooperation with the European Union, was intended to protect vulnerable individuals and/or groups who are not citizens of Montenegro, and who due to race, religion, nationality, membership to a particular group, political opinion or similar features, in the country of their origin have limited human rights and which would be subjects to inhuman or degrading treatment or their life, safety and freedom would be endangered.

Centre managed to obtain 450.000 Euros, out of which 250.000 Euros was provided for the purchase of the equipment and 200.000 for the co-financing of the construction of the Centre.

Due to the realization of this project, Montenegro fulfilled the obligations from the international treaties, as well as those from the Action Plan for the EU accession.

Total number of asylum seekers in the Centre for asylum seekers in 2014 was 1568, and the number of asylum seekers in 2015, until 14 September 2015 is 945.

Currently, there are 5 asylum seekers in the Centre - family from Armenia and a man from Kosovo.
